Chailly,
the name being originally Celtic, is a place which has been inhabited
for many centuries. A strong-hold occupied the site of the Château during
the 12th century. At the beginning of the 15th century, Jean, Lord de
Loges, transforms it into a fortress with four turrets and a draw-bridge,
and later Hugues, his son, turns the old château into an up-dated Renaissance
residence. It did not undergo any further exterior transformations until
today. The Lenet, Brunet and du Tillet families will own the château
in turn until the 1789 Revolution. During this troubled period, the
château is protected against the excess of several zelous patriots,
because the domaine is inhabited by a " Fermier de Seigneurie " Augustin
Godard, Mayor of Chailly and "Lieutenant Criminel" at Arnay- le-Duc.
The Godard family is going to buy the château in 1796 and sell it again
to the Chalon family in 1888. The present owner, Yasuhiko Sata, will
have the château restored from 1987 on, thanks to the hard work of about
a hundred people. It is classed as a Historic Monument and transfor-
med into one of the most luxurious hotels in Burgundy.
